Signs that your spouse is having an affair

If you have been suspecting that your spouse is having an affair, take note of some of the signs below and observe if they are present in your spouse.

• Starting to dress up and/or put more effort into their appearance
  • Your spouse may begin to have pay more attention to their looks and start purchasing new clothes, lingerie/underwear and perfume/colognes. They may also have a sudden need to watch their weight and be more health conscious.
• Reaching home late after work and/or after dinner time
  • This behaviour would be suspicious if your spouse usually heads home right after work and has dinner at home. Some guilty parties might use the excuse that they have to work overtime. This may also be coupled with them sharing less about events happening at work.
• Sudden need to travel overseas for work when it was not the case previously
  • This also includes any company trips or getaways where spouses are not invited.
• Always on their phones even when you are around
  • When this happens, look out for tell-tale signs such as smiling for unknown reasons when texting or speaking secretly when on calls.
• For men: increased spending on credit cards or cash when he is usually thrifty and careful about his expenses
• For women: increase in spending, frequent trips with girlfriends or expensive gifts

Steps to take if you suspect your spouse is cheating

1. Monitor the situation

Start a diary and record all your observations about their change in behaviour, including any calls that they make and the time of the call. If their behaviour continues for 2 weeks or if it is starting to make you feel uncomfortable, approach a counsellor or someone you can trust to talk it out.

2. Refrain from discussing this with your children

If you have children, try not to mention about this to them as it will only make things worse and complicate the situation by affecting them emotionally. You can talk to them about it once you have sufficient evidence and are in the right state of mind to inform them rationally.

3. Do not confront your spouse

This will only lead to either a denial or them trying to wheedle you into thinking that you are paranoid and thinking too much. Thereafter, once your spouse is aware of your suspicion, they will start to be more wary of their actions and it may be tougher for you to find out the truth.

4. Be honest with yourself

Finding out the truth may not necessarily lead to a divorce. In fact, you now have the upper hand in deciding what you want to do and how you wish to deal with it. If your spouse has been a good husband/wife and parent to your children, you can choose to either close an eye and go for counselling or have a talk with them.
